White Buffalo Calf Woman

The legend of White Buffalo Calf Woman is the story of the day Spirit visited the Native Americans in the form of a beautiful woman.  It was a time of trouble. There was division and fighting, and hunger. She gifted them with the sacred pipe and taught them how to walk like a living prayer.  She gave them rituals to remind them of the oneness of all life, and brought them peace and hope.

As she left, she turned into a white buffalo.  As she disappeared over the horizon, herds of buffalo swept over the plain, bringing life to a starving people.

The white buffalo is sacred to Native American tribes. It represents re-birth and world-harmony.  It is a symbol of hope and peace, and the story of White Buffalo Calf Woman exists throughout the nations.

A special gift- to a special place

Earthfire Institute is a one-of-a-kind wildlife sanctuary in Driggs, Idaho, where wild animals live side by side with human beings in harmony and trust.  Earthfire embodies all that White Buffalo Calf Woman taught, and recently, Earthfire was gifted with a white buffalo calf.  A Lakota Sioux Pipe Carrier was attending a retreat at Earthfire, and asked if they would keep one of these sacred creatures on their land. To read more about the most recent inhabitant of Earthfire, click here: http://earthfireinstitute.org/2012/05/the-sacred-white-buffalo/

The story of Earthfire is an incredible one, and in keeping with our current stories theme, we are re-publishing the interview with Earthfire founder, Dr. Susan Eirich.

To visit the Earthfire website, just click on their banner above. Currently, they are raising money for a badly needed winter infirmary for the animals. Last winter, for lack of a shelter large enough, these dear and dedicated people nursed a sick (fully grown!) grizzly bear in their living room! If you would like to contribute, visit http://earthfireinstitute.org/infirmary-and-hospice-barn/ or click on Earthfire's calf above.
